Diabetes and Your Diet

Diabetes takes an enormous toll on the health of our society. This illness accelerates aging, damages the kidneys, cardiovascular system, eyes and nerve tissue, increases cancer risk, and may play a role in dementia. However, Type 2 diabetes is a lifestyle disease, meaning that our food choices and exercise regimen can have a great impact on reducing the risk of developing this disease.
In this class, our JAX Cooking Studio chef teams up with Dietitian Sammy Previte of Dietitians of Palm Valley to teach you how to eat to prevent diabetes and how to eat if you have diabetes or pre-diabetes. Together, they will help you learn to take control of your health through scientific research supported changes in your dietary behaviors. Evidence-based studies indicate that even those with Type 1 diabetes can improve their health and quality of life with sound dietary changes.
Please come prepared to cook! We believe in learning by doing. As Dietitian Previte explains the types of foods that should be included in your nutrient-filled diet, the chef will teach you to prepare these foods in ways that preserve the nutrients and produce delicious results. At the end of the class, we will enjoy the meal we prepared at the JAX Cooking Studio communal tables. During the meal, you will have the opportunity to ask the dietitian and chef any questions you may have so that you can implement what you learned and improve your health.
